When I wrote and posted this, I did not realize that Newsvine had changed how threads and discussions happen. This is not a change for the better for MANY reasons. If those of y'all here now like the way it is now, you are welcome to it but I have no interest in an environment when I cannot moderate the discussions regarding my own writings and ideas. I also have no power to remove comments that I find either offensive or non-constructive... like those from "American Patriots". I do not intend to give a forum for asshats like them, who hide behind aliases to obstruct constructive dialog among thinking people who are willing to tell the world who they are. I also have no interest in providing a forum for short, meaningless postings.
Feel free to continue to discuss this among yourselves but I won't be participating anymore. I also doubt that I will be posting anything else to Newsvine and, if I do, I won't open my writings to this kind of crap.
Have a good day.
A couple of years ago, I started collecting data on mass / rampage killing events as research for an article I wanted to write on the 2nd Amendment. I gave up because they were happening so frequently that I couldn't keep them up to date in what I was trying to write.
Today we had two different shooting events at two different colleges in two different states. More lives gone. It's like fighting the Kiaju monsters in "Pacific Rim", they get bigger, harder to defeat, the time span between the events keeps shrinking, and now, the inevitable, two at once.
Okay, I'm just going to come right out and say it... this is the second decade of the 21st Century, not the later part of the 18th Century. Things have changed completely. I'm no longer satisfied with the idea of better gun control laws because this is a battle being waged inside The Constitution. As long as the loons can keep hiding behind the 2nd Amendment, they will always win. So, what do we do?
The answer is simple, we need a "Gordian Knot" solution. Since the "other side" won't allow reasonable adjustments to be made, sensible laws to be written, guns to be registered or even data to be collected, we have to say "Enough", and stop trying to undo the knot, we need to just cut it away.
We have a precedent for amending The Constitution to get rid of a bad Constitutional amendment (prohibition). Now, we need to establish a precedent for amending The Constitution to get rid of out-of-date and dangerous amendments from the "Bill of Rights". In plain, simple language, we need to propose a new Constitutional Amendment to remove or seriously modify the 2nd Amendment. Then, when the conservatives, Republicans and gun-nuts try to prevent such a solution from even being talked about, they need to be forced to stand up to the American people and explain why we still need the 2nd Amendment.
Force the issue, force the debate, and force us to look at The Constitution as a document meant to serve the greater good of the American people, not a place to hide murderers and sociopaths... and the Republicans and conservatives who make it all possible
